HPM’s Co-Op Justin Schwab Leading Fundraising Efforts for Auburn Non-Profit Supporting Student Veterans

Schwab

Justin Schwab, an Auburn co-op, has been able to not only gain experience in the construction industry through his work with HPM, but he’s also been able to honor and utilize his past military experience through the Auburn Student Veterans Association (ASVA).

HPM’s co-op and internship program affords college students the opportunity to gain real-life experience and become a part of the team at HPM. Not to mention, many of our full-time employees were former co-op students or interns who have decided to continue their career with us.

Our HPM student co-ops are driven, determined, intuitive and relational. We love seeing our co-ops embody our company values, work hard and make a difference not only in our business but also in their academic communities.

ASVA is a non-profit organization that provides student veterans with resources that support them through their time pursuing higher education. The goal of the organization is to provide information and resources while helping student veterans connect with each other.

“ASVA is by and for student veterans to help each other out,” Justin says. “Most student veterans already have families established, and entering into higher education comes with a lot of struggles financially and in their relationships. ASVA helps us to get together as a community while providing scholarships to student veterans.”

To help students meet their financial needs, ASVA hosts fundraising events throughout the year to provide as many scholarships and school supplies as possible to the student veterans. For example, ASVA provides laptop computers to student veterans that cannot afford one.

“Providing a laptop affords our students the ability to complete homework at home, and makes it easier to spend at least some time with their family,” Justin says.

Two of ASVA’s largest fundraising events of the year are coming up this fall. In November, The ASVA Veterans Gala honors student veterans for their accomplishments in both their military careers as well as academically at Auburn University. At this year’s 4th Annual Veterans Gala, the guest speaker will be Sgt. Noah Galloway.

Operation Iron Ruck is a fundraising event intended to bring awareness to the problem of veteran suicide. ASVA partners with the Campus Veterans Association (CVA) at the University of Alabama. Ruckers carry a 22-pound rucksack representing the 22 veterans a day who are lost to suicide while completing a 151-mile ruck march between stadiums. The items in the rucksack and all funds raised are donated to the student veterans associations and other organizations that serve veterans.

For HPM’s Justin Schwab, these events and ASVA have made huge impacts on his time at Auburn University. Having enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at 19 years old, and then being deployed in both Iraq and the Western Pacific, Justin’s transition into college life was far from the usual “freshman” level student.

“The biggest thing when it comes to student veterans is that we don’t usually fit in with the typical student. ASVA gives us a place where we can get together with people who understand us and where we can be ourselves. And then, ASVA helps us get involved with other student organizations and events to help us come out of our shell.”

Here at HPM, we’re grateful for an opportunity to recognize how invaluable these students such as Justin are not only to their respective industries and academic programs, but to our communities as a whole.

And while these student veterans may not be the typical student, there is at least one activity they participate in that most Auburn students do: tailgating. If you’re interested in meeting these student veterans, the ASVA tailgate is located on the law at Foy Hall right next to Ross Square.

Justin says, “Tell them ‘Hot Wheels’ sent you.”

HPM’s Jesse Montgomery Helps Fight School Absenteeism in a Dallas Community through Volunteer Laundromat Project

According to the Department of Education, one out of every six students miss three or more weeks during a school year. Students with chronic absenteeism are likely to not be able to read at their grade level, drop out of school, and be linked to difficult outcomes in adult life. Across the United States, there have been many approaches to help encourage and support these children.

Montgomery

For Jesse Montgomery, HPM Preconstruction Manager, the completion of a two-year volunteer project on a community laundromat in Dallas, Texas has much more impact than what one may think.

Jesse is the 2018 Foundation Project Chair of The Real Estate Council (TREC), an organization which has contributed more than $12.5 million in grant funds and assisted more than 150 nonprofit organizations in its community projects.

He currently has been working alongside TREC to lead an influential construction project that aims to bring change to a neighborhood in South Dallas through the reconstruction of a local laundromat.

As the Foundation Project Chair, Jesse had to sort through many project options to select which organization would be the recipient of the TREC’s funds, time and expertise. What really made the laundromat stand out as the volunteer project to pursue was more than the practical details, but the needs of the community.

“I was made aware that the residents of this area didn’t have access to washers or dryers in their homes or public laundromat facilities due to low-income. Consequently, children in this area were frequently missing school because they didn’t have clean clothes and didn’t want to go. Taking on this project would mean that we were helping create a business that could really help meet dire needs in this community.”

Jesse Montgomery

The Cornerstone Baptist Church had an even greater plan for the building. With the opening of a laundromat, not only could people in the community do their laundry, but the church saw the potential to allow members of the community to work there. The church also had a vision of taking the remainder of the building to add other businesses, such as a convenience store, to employ people and create more opportunities within the community.

While Jesse worked on this project through the organization TREC, HPM also played an important role in helping Jesse act as a project manager for this volunteer project.

“I’m so grateful to have been working for HPM during this volunteer project, because it helped me simply by being able to be around so many successful project managers that I could bounce ideas off of and ask how to approach different tasks.”

Jesse Montgomery

The laundromat project was a first for both Jesse and TREC. The volunteer projects usually stay at the $60,000 budget and have a quick turn-around for completion. However, this laundromat project took two full years of volunteering and over $500,000 was raised for the renovations.

TERC volunteer workday

Additionally, Jesse and TREC held a volunteer workday and is soon to host their first grand opening for an actual business.

As Jesse looks behind at the successes of this project and ahead at what’s next, it’s clear to see the values that he has when it comes to both his work ethic and his care for his community.

“Really, I love helping people,” Jesse said. “At HPM, being in preconstruction allows me to help clients make the right decisions for their projects. And with this TREC volunteer work, I’m able to put a face to what I’m contributing to. I’ve had a great experience and I’m eager to see what’s next for me.”

The grand opening for the laundromat is September 21, 2019. For more information about TREC, visit their website at recouncil.com.

HPM Makes Commitment to High-Quality Services by Hiring Preconstruction Expertise

When it comes to your construction project, the success of your project at its completion directly corresponds with your planning before construction happens. That’s why HPM has made a commitment to high-quality preconstruction services by offering a variety of services to meet client needs, by maintaining clear and consistent communication with clients and by having an expertised and knowledgeable preconstruction team to lead and manage project planning.

Now, HPM is expanding the preconstruction team with the hiring of mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering (MEP) expertise in-house. By adding Michael Eskew as a Mechanical Preconstruction Manager and Kyle Talley as an Electrical Preconstruction Manager to the team, HPM will now be able to build on our quality of service in the preconstruction phase.

Meet our new team members

Michael Eskew, Mechanical Preconstruction Manager

Eskew

Eskew is an Auburn University graduate, and has over 25 years of experience in mechanical engineering, project management, sales and preconstruction services in the construction industry. Following in his family’s footsteps, Eskew’s father worked as a consultant for Hoar Construction. Eskew gladly took the opportunity offered by HPM to move to the program management business where he is truly comfortable and can best apply his knowledge and practical experience.

Kyle Talley, Electrical Preconstruction Manager

Talley

Talley previously worked for large electrical subcontractor in Birmingham for 18 years, working in the field on various construction projects for electrical estimating. Having spent most of that time estimating as well as managing a team of other estimators, Talley has developed a set of skills such as balancing thoroughness, organization, and accuracy with the flexibility and time management required to meet deadlines. Talley has extensive experience as a chief electrical estimator with two decades of experience in the construction industry that will be beneficial to HPM.

What is the Value of Preconstruction Services?

HPM’s preconstruction services offer expertise in planning a construction project before the actual construction begins, including feasibility studies, cost analyses, estimating, master scheduling, and design team structure and selection.

Realizing the value of preconstruction services results in more efficient strategies, timelines, budgets and communication techniques.

While HPM previously consulted subcontractors for MEP expertise, having Talley and Eskew working within HPM enhances what the company can offer to clients. Both Talley and Eskew have extensive years of expertise in the industry, and provide invaluable benefits to HPM as individuals, as well as within our team as a whole.

“The value our roles bring to HPM is knowledge-based expertise,” Talley said. “HPM evaluated their needs and reached out to their clients to see if these positions would add value to their current services. HPM ultimately decided to build a team with more expertise in more areas of preconstruction services.”

By adding these new positions to the team, HPM is shifting from relying on subcontractors and their availability, capacity and willingness to join in HPM’s projects. Instead, HPM’s preconstruction team is incorporating greater levels of expertise for a more cohesive and extensive level of service that can be offered in-house.

“HPM is hired to be the experts, and the more expertise, the better,” Eskew said. “We know how to address curveballs and propose solutions more effectively than any other company because our team is well seasoned in the industry.”

There are many advantages of HPM hosting these positions internally rather than subcontracted. One major advantage is having all team members being with HPM makes it much easier to control non-disclosure agreements for clients, which in turn leads to greater levels of trust between the team and clients.

Ultimately, these positions being held by those within HPM increase efficiency in program management. By being able to quickly evaluate and accommodate client needs, HPM can smoothly work together and coordinate teams. Additionally, these positions help knock down any barriers due to communication because of the greater accessibility of the preconstruction team.

Another element that is an advantage to the preconstruction team is creating a team that is more well-rounded, with growing expertise in multiple facets. Members of the preconstruction team, such as Talley, will begin to teach others on topics that can expand their skills.

“One of the goals from these new positions is to learn from others on the preconstruction team, and to train others what we are doing,” Talley said.

“With a more available and experienced preconstruction team, HPM will continue to stand out in the industry as a leader. Adding a Mechanical Preconstruction Manager and an Electrical Preconstruction Manager to the HPM preconstruction team enhances the experience of the team internally and adds more expertise externally with clients.”

While there, McSween forged new ties with the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System – North Carolina’s second-largest school district – where he provided oversight for the design and implementation for a K-12 bond program. McSween is largely credited for helping to grow the school system’s bond program from $130 million to its present-day total that exceeds $2 billion.

Since 2015, McSween has served as president of Port Saint Lucie Speakers Toastmaster Club, an organization dedicated to improving communication and leadership skills. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Rochester, held an NC General Contractors License and was an OSHA 500 certified trainer.

In addition to McSween’s responsibilities of identifying new opportunities for HPM services to expand into the market, he will also offer professional development opportunities for HPM’s team members, such as teaching public speaking and other leadership skills. McSween will also oversee the growth of the firm’s diversity programming. McSween was awarded the “Catalyst of Diversity” award by the Charlotte Business Journal for his exemplary work in the community and for helping small minority and female owner businesses compete and excel in their respective fields.

HPM is known for having family-like relationships, profitable stewardship and continual pursuit of improvement, and McSween is sure to add value to HPM’s leadership, impact and reputation within the program management industry.

“Derek is a force of positive change. We’re certain he will make a lasting impact on HPM and be an unwavering source of guidance for our firm.”

Designing the Future of Region Bank’s Growth in Hattiesburg

March marked the beginning of a new chapter for Regions Bank in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, thanks to HPM’s work in creating a brand-new mortgage operations facility. The HPM team oversaw the management and procurement of all design, engineering, and construction for the $23 million project that was Regions‘ largest ground-up construction project in 2018 across its 15-state imprint. As an ever-growing company that also is one of the nation’s largest banks, a commitment to constant evolution in an effort to meet customer and employee needs is central to Regions. Commissioning HPM to manage the Hattiesburg mortgage operations project is a perfect example of that commitment.

The resulting 59,055-square-foot facility was the culmination of 20 months of collaboration between Regions and HPM, since bank officials announced plans to consolidate mortgage operations and move to a larger, more accommodating space back in April 2017.

The new center consolidates 325 employees from three separate downtown Hattiesburg buildings into one centralized mortgage facility. The facility sits on a 10-acre site with the building itself taking up two acres and the remainder of the space being used for parking and walking trails for employees. HPM’s plans also allow for a 20,000-square-foot expansion option, successfully fulfilling Regions’ goal to obtain a long-term expansion solution. Other goals met through the project were a reduction in Regions’ operating footprint and increased efficiency in the company’s account servicing.

On the design end, the project provides a balance of open and collaborative space to support a healthy work environment. The open-concept office layout allows for collaboration between departments in a comfortable, yet energizing environment. Smart design elements and modern furnishings provide functionality without compromising aesthetics. HPM partnered with Kimball furniture company to outfit the office in multi-functional pieces that maximize storage space, comfort, and visual appeal. Other key design features include floor-to-ceiling windows, a lobby skylight, and the use of reclaimed pine for a decorative branded wall.

Building amenities include:

  • 175-seat multi-purpose room comprised of three smaller conference rooms with a moveable wall partition
  • two large café break rooms with kitchens and micro markets
  • two exterior patios with outdoor seating
  • two conference rooms with video conference room capabilities
  • multiple conference rooms with display monitors
  • lockers
  • two wellness rooms
  • an ATM
  • a centralized waste station

All in all, the project marks another successful collaboration between HPM and Regions. “We are extremely proud of the new facility and couldn’t be happier with the tremendous work HPM has put in to meet all of our needs for the project, “ says Mortgage Servicing Division Manager Morgan McCarty. “They listened to our vision for the building and executed at every turn. This building is key to Regions’ long-term growth, and we’re proud to have had HPM on board to help make it happen.”

No Delay of Game: Building the Atlanta Braves Spring Training Facility in North Port, Florida

The date of the opening game was set. It would be a big public relations event with 8,000 people on-site. There was no flexibility in terms of the deadline. No room for error. The Atlanta Braves’ new $125 million training facility in North Port, Florida had to be ready to go on March 24, 2019. No wiggle room.

Alan Butler

With HPM taking the leadership role on the project, ground was broken in late fall of 2017. But according to Alan Butler, HPM’s lead on the project, the Braves’ relationship with the initial general contractor was disjointed from the start. With only 16 months left until the March 24, 2019 deadline, the Braves’ organization opted to change contractors.

This type of dramatic change would normally wreak havoc on a project schedule, but HPM kept the job moving, maintained the schedule, and the project was completed on March 1, 2019.

Butler said, “We turned a cow pasture into a stadium in 15 months, even though there was a change in contractor late in the game.”

In addition to the contractor change, many changes were made — there were more than 1,300 requests for information — throughout the course of the project as well.

Butler praised Sarasota-based Tandem Construction, who joined Southfield, Michigan based Barton Malow on the job, for their hard work and professionalism throughout the project. “They knocked it out of the park. They really performed,” Butler added.

The stadium during construction (December 2018)

The project team was able to shave roughly $13 million off the price of the project through value engineering. He explained the original budget was $125 million, but the project team got it down to $108 million initial contract value without materially changing the project.

The land for the facility was donated by private developer Mattamy Homes. The 80-acre facility features a ballpark with 6,200 seats, a three-story clubhouse, seven practice fields, and state-of-the-art meeting areas and locker rooms. CoolToday, a local air conditioning, heating, plumbing, and electrical services company, entered into a 20-year naming rights agreement with the Braves, and the facility’s official name is CoolToday Park.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the project was the field had to be exactly the same as the Braves’ home field in Atlanta, SunTrust Park.

“The stadium is the exact same dimensions as their regular season field. The sod is the exact same sod, and the infield mix is exactly the same as SunTrust Park. The team practices and trains on a field that’s as identical to their home field as possible,” he said.

The final month leading up to opening day was the most challenging.  He added, “The last month was brutally busy. We were looking at everything, putting on all the final touches, making sure everything was done just right. We had to scramble to get things done very quickly. But we did it.”

“With HPM on site, the Braves’ staff could stay in Atlanta working but could still be confident their capital project was going well. We were in charge of all communications, daily quality checks, cost management, and project monitoring and reporting. We led the construction of an amazing facility for the Atlanta Braves and built a strong relationship with the organization. And we’re very proud of both.”

Realizing the Value of Preconstruction Services

James Goree, Regional Director of Preconstruction

With a decade-long career at HPM, I have learned to appreciate that highly successful projects are the ones that do a good job of balancing budget, schedule, and quality, so it only makes sense that focusing on these areas as early in the project as possible would prove valuable. In fact, that is the idea behind preconstruction services – early analysis of the effects that project circumstances and components will have on schedule and cost. Oddly enough, many owners miss the mark by not employing these services on their projects.

Preconstruction typically includes the evaluation of construction methods, project pricing, value engineering, constructability reviews and bid and award process management. At HPM, we have seen this type of in-depth analysis pave the way to a clearer path for the project, in many cases resolving challenges before they arise and saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in schedule and cost overruns. Essentially, employing these services helps map out a plan early in design and way before shovels even go in the ground, putting teams in a better position to manage change and proactively communicate. We can all see the benefits in that rationale, right?

I am a firm believer that preconstruction sets a solid foundation for every project, no matter the size of the project or the market it represents. Time and time again, experts publish articles on the benefits of preconstruction. At HPM, we have seen first-hand the impact on our projects and have captured those stories in our portfolio of case studies. When teams collaborate early to identify meaningful solutions or take the time to build a project virtually through the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) owners reap the benefits. A program manager who understands the value of preconstruction and can walk-the-talk with their clients is in the best position to guide projects to success.

Simply put, our role in preconstruction is to offer a path that allows our clients to accomplish their goals while remaining on budget. As preconstruction experts, we are attuned to market conditions and are able to paint a holistic picture of the project. From budget to sequencing, we can guide decision-making from design to start of construction. Using our expertise, we should be expected to right size the bid packages for optimal performance, resulting in maximized ROI – all along the way providing regular updates and maintaining deadlines to keep the project on-track. And at the end of the day, that is our goal – to keep you informed and help you achieve success, whatever your definition may be.

H.O. Weaver and Sons of Mobile has been awarded the Enabling Works Package of preparations to make a building site ready for construction. It covers activities from site preparation, creation of access routes, and the installation of facilities like security fencing, ramps, and signage placement.

The package was awarded in November 2018, and the project is targeted for completion in early 2019.

Birmingham-based Brasfield & Gorrie teamed with Huntsville-based design firm BRPH has been selected for Package 1 of the project, which consists of design-build services for the building of the new A220 final assembly line and existing logistic center expansion.

“Brasfield & Gorrie is honored and excited to continue its relationship with Airbus, HPM/Mott MacDonald, Mobile Airport Authority, and the City of Mobile by building the new A220 Final Assembly Line,” said Regional Vice President and Division Manager John Strid. “Having built multiple projects at the Brookley Aeroplex, including the first Airbus Final Assembly Line, we are able to bring considerable experience to the construction of this important facility.”

The package was awarded in late 2018, and the project is targeted for completion in mid-2020. “Our intent is to implement and execute a fast-track delivery process to ensure the goals of this project are met,” said HPM Vice President of Program Development Greg Ellis. “We’re confident these teams have the industry expertise and resources necessary to meet the goals of Airbus and the A220 project as a whole.”

HPM, which has offices in Alabama, Georgia, Texas, and Florida, is responsible for managing all aspects of the design and construction of the new facility, as well as expansion of Airbus’ current facilities to accommodate increased A320 family production on the site. HPM was involved in the construction of the Airbus Engineering Center in Mobile over a decade ago and managed construction of the A320 production facilities, completed in 2015.

HPM continues to work with its long-time industry partner, Mott McDonald, providing program management services for the A220, as both firms did for the A320 campus.

HPM Chosen to Lead Boom Supersonic’s First Manufacturing Facility

Collaboration and Partnership
HPM was recently selected to lead the site selection process, planning, design and construction of Boom Supersonic’s first manufacturing facility in the US and is currently collaborating with Boom’s internal project team to recruit all project team members and providers. Also in partnership with Site Selection Group (SSG), we are developing and implementing the optimal location strategy for Boom’s manufacturing operations.

“Together with our strategic partner, SSG, HPM is proud to work with Boom as it develops the vision to bring supersonic flight back to the global commercial passenger market and lead the way to bring new and advanced manufacturing jobs to its facility,” said Mike Lanier, HPM president.

He continued, “Boom’s vision is to remove the barriers to experiencing the planet: time, money and hassle, and Overture is a step in that direction. With our experience in the aerospace industry, we were a top choice to lead Boom through the site selection process, and we couldn’t be more excited.”

A Revolution in Aviation and Aerospace Technology
Overture, a Mach-2.2 supersonic commercial airliner, is anticipated to serve hundreds of transoceanic routes. The airliner will make the world dramatically more accessible with its travel speeds more than twice as fast as subsonic aircraft. Currently, Boom is assembling XB-1, a Mach-2.2 supersonic demonstrator aircraft. The data collected from XB-1 test flights will prove key technologies in-flight for safe, efficient supersonic travel, as well as help refine the design of Overture. Passenger service is anticipated to begin in the mid-2020s.

Boom Supersonic, based in Denver, Colorado, is known for building the history’s fastest supersonic airliner. In March, they announced that HPM, with its expertise in managing capital building programs, has been selected to lead its one-of-a-kind program to help locate, plan, design and build its first manufacturing facility in the United States.

HPM, Airbus continue partnership with Mobile’s new A220 facility

HPM is once again helping Airbus, an international pioneer in the aerosapce industry, expand their footprint in Mobile, Alabama. Following the success of the A320 project, HPM is continuing its partnership with Airbus as the program manager for the design and construction of its newest assembly line at the Brookley Aeroplex.

The new facility will build A220s, which are smaller jetliners designed and developed by Canadian company Bombardier as the C Series, and later rebranded after Airbus and Bombardier formed a partnership to produce them.

Florent Massou, head of the A220 Program, said the selection of HPM was “great news and an important next-step in bringing A220 production to the U.S. for our U.S.-based customers. We are on track to deliver our first aircraft from Mobile in 2020.”

“Clear expectations are set up with designers and contractors up front, and our team works alongside Airbus to ensure all parties follow through with all the tasks, both large and small, that have to be undertaken each step of the way to achieve the target at the end,” said Greg Ellis, HPM’s Vice President of Program Development.
