DESCRIPTION

With more than 100,000 employees and 340+ stores, HEB serves families across Texas and Mexico today, but the southwestern grocery giant comes from humble beginnings. In 1905 and with a $60 loan, Florence Thornton Butt moved her family to Kerrville, Texas, to establish Mrs. C.C. Butt’s Staple and Fancy Grocery, a one-room store on the ground floor of her family home. In 1919, Florence turned management over to her youngest son, Howard Edward Butt, who delivered groceries by wagon as a boy and went on to introduce major low-cost distribution innovations. In 1942, the year Butt installed air-conditioning in stores and introduced frozen foods, he also opened the first store under the name H-E-B in San Antonio.

During World War II, H-E-B’s Harlingen Canning Company produced food for the armed forces. Women served as store managers, and the company became known for its interest in personnel development. It continues to receive awards recognizing this commitment, including being named one of America’s Best Large Employers in 2019 by Forbes. Today, over 100 years after its founding, H-E-B’s employees and customers remain at the heart of every decision.

The construction projects have ranged from $15 million to $150 million with a variety of local and national general contractors and construction managers. We provide the expertise to allow our client peace of mind and confidence that their project cost was well spent. HPM’s Preconstruction team has provided analysis of building services systems, scheduling and staging, as well as other preconstruction services to ensure renovations and additions begin with a strong foundation.
