Know Before You Go: How to Make the Most of Career Fair Season

September 17, 2026

Career fair season is here.

Whether you’re searching for an internship, exploring career options, or just trying to figure out what comes after graduation, career fairs are one of the best ways to start making connections and learning what opportunities are out there.

At HPM, we meet students across the Southeast every year through career fairs, meet and greets and networking events. We’ve had plenty of conversations with students wondering the same thing:

How do I stand out?

The answer might be simpler than you think.

While most students hope to make a strong impression, many overlook the simple things that can set them apart. Here are a few insights from the Campus Champions on the other side of the table.

Do Your Homework…

Before you walk into a career fair, spend some time learning about the companies you’ll be meeting.

Check out their website. Look through recent projects. Learn what services they provide and where they’re located.

When you can walk up to a recruiter and say, “I saw your team recently worked on…” it helps create a more meaningful connection and shows that you have invested time in learning about the company.

Trust us, our HPM Campus Champions notice.

Don’t Just Hand Over Your Resume

Your resume matters (so definitely bring it!) — but it’s only part of the story.

The students who make the strongest impression are usually the ones who ask thoughtful questions and genuinely want to learn more.

Instead of focusing on what you’re going to say, think about what you’d like to know.

Ask questions like:

  • What does an internship actually look like?
  • What kind of projects would I be exposed to?
  • What opportunities are there to learn and grow?
  • What makes your company different from others in the industry?

A career fair isn’t an interview. It’s a conversation. The more engaged you are, the more memorable you’ll be.

You Don’t Have to Wait Until Senior Year

One of the biggest misconceptions about career fairs is that they’re only for students who are actively looking for jobs.

In reality, the earlier you start, the better.

You can start building relationships, learning about different career paths, and getting comfortable talking with professionals in the industry – even if you’re only in your freshman year.

Every conversation helps you gain confidence, expand your network, and get some experience under your belt.

What Could Your Experience at HPM Look Like?

At HPM, we want students to know that we’re not just filling positions.  We’re looking for future leaders.  HPM took on the Campus Champion Initiative – selecting passionate team members to invest time on campuses across the southeast – because we are always looking for the next generation of top talent.

That’s why our internship program gives students the chance to explore three different tracks, including:

Preconstruction

Help support the planning and estimating process that sets projects up for success before construction begins.

Project Management

Gain exposure to the full lifecycle of a project and see how teams work together to bring ideas from concept to completion.

Field Coordination

Spend time in the field learning about schedule management, quality, problem-solving, and the day-to-day challenges of construction.

Co Ops

Students participating in our co-op program get the opportunity to touch each of those different areas of the business, helping them discover where their interests and strengths align.

The Bottom Line

Career fairs aren’t just about landing an internship or co op. They’re about exploring possibilities, building relationships, and finding organizations that align with your goals.

So do your research. Bring your resume. Ask questions. Be curious.

And if you see HPM on campus this fall, stop by and introduce yourself!

You never know where a conversation might lead…
