Data Center Construction: Special Considerations for Mission-Critical Projects

Supporting Technology—and the People Behind It 

While driven by equipment, data centers rely on people to operate and maintain them. Successful facilities integrate: 

  • Workspaces for IT, facilities, and operations staff 
  • Control rooms and collaboration areas for monitoring and response 
  • Secure zones for sensitive systems 

Thoughtful planning improves efficiency without compromising security or safety. 

Cooling Systems for Variable, High-Density Loads 

Heat management is one of the most critical challenges in HPC and data center environments, particularly where loads fluctuate. 

Effective strategies often include: 

  • On-site chiller plants for high-density computing 
  • Hybrid systems combining chilled water and air-cooled solutions 
  • Redundant and scalable infrastructure 

“HPC environments don’t grow in a straight line,” Bonds noted. “Cooling systems have to adapt as demand changes, which is why combining strategies and planning beyond day-one capacity is so important.” 

Power Reliability and Utility Coordination 

Power is the backbone of every data center. Beyond capacity, reliability is key. 

Critical considerations include: 

  • Access to robust utility power 
  • On-site substations and electrical distribution 
  • Backup power and redundant electrical paths 
  • Early coordination with local utilities 

Design teams must also account for maintenance outages, grid disruptions, and future load increases. 

Commissioning and Performance Under Stress 

Mission-critical facilities must function during both normal operations and unexpected events. 

Commissioning and integrated systems testing ensure: 

  • Electrical, mechanical, and control systems operate as designed 
  • Redundancy and failover sequences work correctly 
  • Systems perform reliably under real-world conditions 

Early commissioning involvement helps identify issues before they impact operations.
